Chapter 5

Margo

B ennett shoves a handful of popcorn in his mouth and stares at the television screen with narrowed eyes. As he masticates the snack, he mulls over the episode. "I don't get it," he finally says. "Dale doesn't even look excited to be with her."

He gets it! "Exactly!" I'm going to throw this bowl of popcorn across the room in excitement. "She had all these men to choose from, a whole season of men to go on dates with, and she made Bachelorette history and chose Dale after like two weeks."

I'm not sure if he gets the premise of the whole show, but Bennett is trying. "Does that mean this season is over? Because I really need to start dinner."

He starts to stand up and I pull him back down. "Whoa. No," I frown.

"There's still half the season to go."

Bennett's eyes widen in fear. "How? Do we have to watch the poor guy get married? Do they break up? What more could there possibly be?!"

Poor thing thinks it's over. So did we all. "There's a new bachelorette," I tell him with a watermelon smile.

"Wow," the excitement vanishes from his voice, "that sounds just...

amazing. But really, I've got to start dinner. Maybe we can finish this another time."

I take care to pause the show instead of stopping and exiting completely.

We'll come back to this even if it's my dying wish. I won't be stopped.

"What are you making?" I follow him to the kitchen and try to keep my eyes off the way his shirt ripples against his muscles while he moves.

Bennett pulls a questionable ziplock bag out of the fridge. "Rabbit stew, actually."

All I can think about is the ziplock bag. Why is it stored like that? "Do you have storage containers?"

"Yeah, of course." He busies himself with pulling out a pot and emptying the contents of the plastic bag into it. "But a ziplock bag freezes and thaws more evenly than a container. You can also stack a ton of ziplock bags laid out flat in the freezer. It's cost-effective but for space."

It amazes me that he doesn't see what a challenging person he is to deal with. Bennett hums to himself while he stirs his cold soup, acting as if storing soup in a plastic bag isn't weird. "Right," I narrow my eyes, "that's perfectly normal."

I watch him for a few minutes as he works. Bennett dashes some salt in here, throws some pepper in there, grabs a tube of roasted herbs and garlic, and goes to town shimmying and shaking. "Calm down, Wolfgang Puck.

You've got enough flavor."

He was really getting into it because Bennett looks jarred that I stopped him. He stares at the tube and gives me a guilty smile. "Love me some garlic," he admits shyly. "You should see me make sixty clove garlic soup."

I wrinkle my nose in disgust. "No, thanks, dragon breath, I'm good."

But he only shrugs and goes back to stirring. "Suit yourself. More sixty clove garlic soup for me." And honestly, I believe him.
